NYC: Anti-Islam Hate Leads to Death Threats

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) supports our universal human rights of religious freedom, freedom of conscience, and freedom of worship for all people.  R.E.A.L. rejects hatred and rejects the activities of those who seek to promote hatred towards identity groups and specific religions.  R.E.A.L. rejects calls for violence and violence, vandalism, and protests to disrupt freedom of religion by individuals at houses of worship.

Amidst the growing protests against the Park Place Islamic Center in New York City, ABC News reported that Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf has been repeatedly targeted by death threats.  ABC News reported that NYC police were continuing to investigate such threats.

However, other threats are being made on the Internet in plain sight.

On the web site, articles by “Former Muslims United” (FMU) director Nonie Darwish have continued to seek to demonize Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf and portray him as the basis behind a takeover of the United States.  FMU’s Nonie Darwish has been part of the protests against the Park Place Islamic Center in New York, as well as protests against the Murfreesboro, Tennessee mosque.

On September 22, 2010, reader comments on Ms. Darwish’s latest article “Ground Zero Imam Exposed” at have included actual death threats against Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf.

One reader “Mike” states “Kill this Imam and hault the building of the mosque!!!!”  “Mike’s” death threat got 12 supporters with a “thumbs-up” under the article.

Another reader of the article “Rose” calls for Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf and President Obama to be hung, writing “this man needs to be hung by the gonads along with Muslim Obama.  All Muslim needs to be deported to a country where they can proctice the cult religion and leave the U.S. alone.”  Rose’s comment got 20 supporters.

Another reader of the article “Dan” writes “we will burn your ground zero mosque to the hell! I hope this pig is killed by Sunday! Die Imam Feisal Abdel Rauf, DIE!”  Dan’s comment got 7 supporters.

A day after such comments, they remain on the web site.

R.E.A.L. has retained a screen shot of such comments, and can verify this to those who require this information by emailing us at   In the meantime, you can go to the website and see such comments yourself. There is no sense of fear or accountability by those openly calling for the killing and hanging of others.  R.E.A.L. has contacted others on this.

Sadly, we have been seeing a trend of such death threats in Texas and other parts of the nation against Islamic religious leaders.

We have seen unashamed efforts by those who have called over the media, to the press, on the Internet (including on major newspapers’ web sites) for bombing attacks on Islamic centers.   Such open calls for bombings against Islamic centers are still there today with no shame and no accountability.

We have seen seen a troubling and growing pattern of arson attacks on Islamic centers, construction equipment, and even pipe bomb attacks on a Florida mosque. An Arlington, Texas mosque was targeted by arsonists and its worshipers have been harassed.  In New York City, a Muslim’s taxicab driver was slashed for being a Muslim.  In New York State, vandals shot off a gun outside a mosque and nearly ran over a Muslim worshiper.

Then on September 22, 2010, the latest violence associated with American mosques was an arson attack on the car of an Islamic Center’s member in Louisiana.

Hate is affecting Muslim Americans ability to worship, with the Department of Justice stating on September 21, 2010 reporting on investigations of the federal Religious Land Act, “Of the 18 land-use matters involving Muslims reviewed by the Department of Justice, eight have been opened since May of this year.”

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) rejects such unashamed violence and calls for violence intended to terrorize Muslim Americans.  R.E.A.L. calls for the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to bring those to JUSTICE who call for violence and commit violent acts.  Equal justice must be meted out to those terrorists or those who conspire to commit terrorism from any identity group.

But rejection of such calls for violence and hatred is the responsibility of EVERY American.  It is our obligation to be responsible for equality and liberty.

We urge all Choose Love, Not Hate – Love Wins.
